Your car’s been totaled and it was 100% your fault and you killed half the population of a small town in the process, but it happened in international waters (don’t ask) so they couldn’t prosecute you. Upon returning to
To be clear you must keep this car from now till forever, no replacing it. Furthermore you’re not allowed to take it to a mechanic, so you’ll have to do all the work yourself.
The final condition. You must find this vehicle on Craigslist for under $5,000 (or whatever that is on the metric system). You’re allowed to modify the car with $1,000 but no engine swaps.
Go!

Probably a GM pickup truck. Pushrod v8 is simple enough to rebuild yourself. Rest of truck is also simple to work on with plenty of elbow room. Chassis is stout, so it will survive a long time.

OK, this is challenging. You want something that was built in large numbers to ensure parts now, but also collectable enough that parts in the future won’t be too bad, but still not so special that the car can be found for under $5000. A Mustang would probably be a good fit, except it’s not a very practical as your only car (also killing half a small town is what got us into this mess in the first place!).
It may be a horrible mistake, but I think I might roll the dice with a 3-series wagon (probably an E46?). That could get you on repair costs, but if you are doing things yourself maybe not so bad. But should always have parts available (I assume they are still cranking out new window regulators to meet demand), and you get something fun, luxurious, and practical.
Of course maybe Miata is always the answer. Get a popular and cheap drivers car and assuming Carsharing/Taxi/Uber/Self Driving cars will be able to cover the practicality hole.

So suburban or Land Cuiser.

Probably a late LS 400 or LS430.

If I killed half the population in a small town I would never drive again. I don’t get why that detail was necessary.

Probably an old Jag of some sorts. Because I like to punish myself after killing half a population of a town.

But...they can’t prosecute me. Also pretty sure I would rethink driving entirely if I killed a small town

7th-8th-9th generation single-cab F-Series with 4x4, a manual, and either the straight-six (like my dad’s 9th gen) or the 5.0 (like my mom & stepdad’s 8th gen, pictured).

123 manual diesel wagon. Preferably in Brown.
Too slow to kill people. Classic already and Mercedes still makes parts for them and will continue to do so because they kick ass at supporting classics. I try to be a mechanic sometimes, I think I can manage to fix it. Super reliable.

$1,000 wouldnt be spent on modifications then. If its the vehicle you have to keep forever and work on it yourself, that money is going to tools/windshield wiper blades instead of a K&N air filter. Also I would probably end up riding a bicycle since Im no mechanic. :P
Im guessing a truck will probably be the choice since its more ultility and easier to access things.

Anything with an SBC, but most likely a truck.
But how the heck did I manage to kill a small town with a car in international waters?
